There are other ways (some of which you listed) to find out about older material that I might like. The sticking point is that I’m only talking about stuff that’s brand new. I basically download tons and tons of albums from bands that I’ve never heard of, listen to enough to form an opinion, then (usually) delete it or (occasonally) buy it. Mostly it just allows me to be well-informed when I talk shit about whatever has the hipsters so excited this month, but occasionally I find something that I really like. Muse are an English rock band from Teignmouth, Devon, formed in 1994. I can check every day to see what’s new, quickly scan the review excerpt to see if it’s something that might interest me, if so, download it and give it a listen. New albums are uploaded at or before release along with partial text and a link to one or more reviews (usually Pitchfork plus another one). Pitchfork itself is so sickeningly awful that I try to avoid it directly, but that doesn’t change the fact that it’s the most reliable source for new music that interests me.īest case scenario (and what I did up until a couple of months ago), I find a torrent site that deals exclusively in music that is similar to what I listen to.
